5 things that I have learned so far on the programme ?
- I only really had knowledge of Adobe Photoshop when I first came to university, so getting to grasps with the other Creative Cloud softwares such as InDesign and Illustrator was a big step for me over first year. Now I'm in second year and have had the chance to experiment with the creative cloud platforms a bit more I feel like I have come along with my use of InDesign and LightRoom, I am still only averagely comfortable with using Illustrator but this will come with experience and now I am starting to develop myself in After Effects too!
- The specific terminology used within Graphic Design; when I first came to LCA I had no previous knowledge of the disciplines within Graphic Design at all really, so learning key terminology for use within industry is something I'm constantly evolving with, but do feel I grasp reasonably quickly
- Before uni I had experimented with a lot of print methods but not at the level of which facilities are available to us now! I loved learning how to use and adapt the process available to me at LCA in the traditional print room, especially methods such as screen printing, foiling and letterpress. These are all methods I consider using within my projects.
- Graphic Design theory, as I was totally new to Graphic Design I only ever considered the practical side. I knew there was theory behind it all but hadn't had chance to properly explore the history. I feel I have most developed this knowledge in general lectures and seminars but more specifically in context of practice where you view Graphic Design at a different scope, in order to build my own opinions
- Skills in time management have had to be exercised through being here at LCA, being able to juggle numerous briefs at the same time is essential, especially with the drain of blogger!
5 things I want to learn more about ?
- Editorial Design is something I've become incredibly interested in so I have wanted to delve into this discipline as much as I can whilst on the course. I can see myself maybe specialising in this within the field of Graphic Design, but at this stage of my practice I'd like to experiment with everything and learn as much as I can before honing in on one thing. Although the process can be problematic, I even enjoy the bookbinding aspect to editorial/publication design and do still want to continue experimenting with this whilst I have access to the facilities.
- The current industry, while I'm on the course I want to learn about the current Graphic Design world out there and how its got to this, so once I graduate I'll be prepared.
- At this stage in the course I have not undertaken much proper work in Branding, so in conjunction with context of practise I am considering focusing in on this with relation to this is something I wouldn't mind trying my hand at.
- Regardless of the second studio brief in 504 coming up I am eager to better myself through animation design and motion graphics. With the current digital age this can fit in fundamentally and brings an interactive nature to projects that print can never offer. I see myself experimenting with material for ads, other digital promo, festival/music related motion graphics for DJs, etc.
- The pros/cons of working for a client, as I am still starting out I have only worked on the more casual briefs outside of uni for friends and family members, etc. This has still given me a great taste of what working for a client in industry will feel like but I have not yet had the chance to properly work within an actual design studio setting like I will after graduation... PLACEMENT!?
- I am able to adapt to a brief and the type/style of work that is required for the target audience
- Idea generation through research and the development of justifications
- I like to keep very much up to date with current Graphic Design through blogs etc, through this I'm able to adapt and grow with current live work, which I consider a skill.
- Fast paced working under pressure
- Editorial design
- Networking skills
- I want to improve my presentations, learn from talks I've attended
- Speaking about my work with confidence
- One aim for this year is to improve my dedication to blogging. I am much better, but I do tend to let it build up a bit as I prefer note taking in a notebook and then transferring it over onto my blog.
- Collaboration
- Say What Studio
- Studio SPGD
- Face.
- Murmure
- Hype Type Studio
