When writing about your design projects online it is important..
- to be effective, be clear about its meaning
- what is responding? - solving a problem? communicating? or improving?

Elevator exercise...

My Project: The Unplugged Campaign

What - "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots" - Albert Einstein

The Unplugged Challenge is a campaign which aims to encourage people to switch their devices off more often.

How - The Unplugged Challenge is to make small steps towards breaking the habits of brainwashed and addicted social media scrollers, emotions-replaced-by-emoji users and fake-compliment seekers.

This will involve switching off all devices before 10pm for 2 weeks, so the nation can feel the difference for themselves. Whilst also encouraging more social interaction in general - allowing us to, in turn, create and appreciate more times of empathy with friends and family.

I have used my satirical Illustrations as a mirror, reflecting the social issues and problems of our time.

Why - However technology does play a pivotal role in our fast evolving society and it would be contradictory for a digitally reliant graphic designer to attempt to even try and discourage it.

In turn, we will never counter-act the advancements of technology, as it is in our human nature to strive forward and push boundaries, but with this campaign I aimed to simply provide a subtle reminder for people not to be as brainwashed by the products and services they consume.

My research has shown me how over-time this has impacted our ability to be empathetic and how it can also have impacts on our health - long term exposure to artificial blue light is bad for the eyes, it slows production of melatonin and in-turn affects our sleeping habits.

I sat down with Alec and resolved how I would cut the extensive word count down to a concise and punchy summary for the project to get the audience quickly engaged and educated.

The Unplugged Challenge

What: A campaign to encourage people to break their digital addiction

How:
A viral campaign that asks them to turn devices off at 10pm each night for two weeks

Why: It will enable them to grasp how over-reliance on technology is harming us physically and socially

The Unplugged Challenge is a tool to help people to break their digital addiction. This viral campaign invites you to turn your devices off at 10pm each night for two weeks. It helps you to realise the extent to which over-reliance on technology harms us physically and socially.

+ Easy to do
+ Encourage people to take challenge together
+ Find fun ways for people to help one another

I learnt a lot about how to quickly and concisely approach social media and project case studies online to be as impactful and to-the-point with the audience as you can.

This is how all great campaigns and brands advertise..

For example look at the new Beckham ad for his new mens grooming brand "House 99"
- he summarised the brand in a few punchy sentences

Alec suggested I watch 'Simon Sinek - How Great Leaders Inspire Action'***
- Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question - "Why?" "How?" & "What?"
His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers suggesting how they are doing things differently through passion and a drive of curiosity, rather than a pay-check. Their innovation and ethos is "why" people buy into what they believe. As a counterpoint he refers to Tivo - the first digital video recorder (DVR) developed and marketed by TiVo Corporation, introduced in 1999 - which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

I think I can best apply this notion and mindset to my own work to drive for success by pushing for projects and directions which I am truly passionate about and want to produce content for, whilst at the same time continuing to remind myself how sometimes I may have to work on briefs I'm not necessarily driven by, but as a designer have to adapt to the various requirements of the client.
