Vapour Interview Planning

Focus on just 2 of them
- Jamie Bugler - creative director
- Dave Robbins - designer with illustration focus
(https://www.instagram.com/justluckand13/)

Allows me to go into further depth with my questions individually, looking at both of their pasts and then how they crossed paths to where they are now.

The interview needs to..
- communicate their route into industry
- identify where their creative practice is currently situated.

Basic Structure..
- Introduce Jamie and Dave individually - getting to know them
- What their practise originated from and its focus - past job roles/experience?
- How Vapour started and how Dave got involved with vapour
- Where it is today/advice they can give me

Purpose of the book
- want it to show their route into industry and how they've grown into what they are now
- want it to be good publicity for them as a studio too
- will bring a camera to get some edgy shots of the studio and them in it & also Lola the dog!
- Aim to use a professional yet laid back/chatty tone of voice for the interview - this will match their approach as young creatives and hopefully allow the book to reflect the vibes of their studio!

QUESTION PLAN

First of all gents, I want to get to know a bit about you both as individuals:
- Can you list me 3 things you couldn't live without?!
- If you weren't in design, what do you think you would be doing?
- So, what is you actual 'job description now'? and what would a normal day for you entail?

I want to find out a bit about how you got to where you both are today:
- What was it that first attracted you to design? was this from a young age? any examples?
- So I take it both of you guys did take the traditional route of university?
--- if not, how did you approach the industry?
--- if so, how was it? Was it all plain sailing for you afterwards in terms of finding work?
(any advice?)

- Did you get any design-related experience elsewhere before Vapour?

So Jamie, I did a bit of research and found out that you actually started Vapour back in 2007. But only offering print design services. It wasn't until 2011 that you decided to broaden the banks and began offering services involving client branding and digital design, etc.
- Can you expand on that for me? Was it something you'd planned for a long time?
- How did you find starting up a studio? Where there any specific practical issues you struggled with, in terms of premises/admin/finance?
I've got to ask, was there a story behind the name?!

So to get yourself out there I heard you ran a bit of a competition!? Involving the chance for a business to win a fresh, new logo designed for free by Vapour
- was this successful promotion?
- How else were you advertising yourself in the early days? (in-comparison to now)

- So from then to now, how fast did the Vapour team start to grow?
- Do you prefer working in a smaller, tight-knit collective of creatives?
- How do you divide up the projects that come in? Do you work as a collective (all chipping in) or as individual designers? (refer to their approach with Scotty)
- What is it that makes a project most challenging? this could be an extra difficult client (obviously don't have to name any names!)
- But are these the most rewarding?
- It's obviously a positive that you have your own in-&-out of house developers - how much easier do you think this makes the design process, in comparison to other studios I've spoken to who have to rely on external third-party developers?
- The final member of your team, Lola, do you feel like she makes the studio a more approachable and happy environment to be in? especially for visiting clients? (aslong as they're not afraid of dogs!)

- Favourite project you've worked on?

- How do you feel about keeping talent in design up in the north? Do you think London is no longer where it's at?
- On that note, can you see yourselves branching out (maybe out of Leeds) in the future?

- Have you any advice to young designers starting out?
