I brought three of the drawn concepts to CAD, leaving behind the rounded brotherhood crest sketches as I did not feel they would keep in consistency with my personal identity.
The first idea I will be discussing, was the waveform concept. As the collective is music based and waveforms are something essential to modern day Djing on digital controllers and CDJS I think it creates a symbol for the collective which would intrigue people, it looks new cool and quite edgy. I simply recorded myself saying 'DesignersWhoDj' to produce the symbol, and then I drew around it illustrator to create the vector image...
This was up against various other concepts I had developed in Illustrator including the double D W attempt and also my concept of a vinyl record combined with the on screen cursor. I trialled various positionings with the cursor and felt it looked most effective in the bottom right corner with the normal arrow and with the trimmed white dividers between it and the vinyl.
I took these initial representations to crit and found once paired with my chosen typeface (Biko Regular (same as personal identity)- sans-serif, rounded, minimal) the more simplistic options looked most effective. I did get a positive response on the 3D DWD, however I do not think it best represents the collective, nor gives it a clear first encounter.
The vinyl and waveform designs were very popular and people even began suggesting ways I could incorporate both into a single logo, however after experimentation I concluded this would overcomplicate the symbol too much, where I would prefer it to be an appealing but simple, easy on the eye design.
Taking forward the simplistic waveform concept I am very pleased with how this represents the collective and applying the type and symbol into a simple bounded/separated box holds its structure and balance well.
Using Biko again, and then simply reversing the 2 colours in the colour scheme it provided a much more sophisticated feel to the design, which was very recognisable to my personal identity aswell. I also provided an alternate bit of logotype for the instagram logo...
