Macroy Smith, the director and founder of People of Print, a collective of creatives who come together to host workshops, produce events, and fulfil briefs for clients such as Design Museum, Protein and the V&A. Smith is also the author of People of Print: Innovative, Independent Design and Illustration, and the Editor of the self-published magazine Print Isn’t Dead.
It was really interesting to here Macroy talk about how he managed to get up and running, and all the good and bad experiences he's had in his creative career so far
- He stressed his hate for publishers and how he got fucked over with the first issue.
- He hates ads in magazines, so tries to steer clear
- He had this kind of 'don't give a fuck attitude, do what you like' attitude which I found inspiring yet questionable at times.
- Was a cool concept discussion about Posterzine and how it became a thing so quickly.
- Recommends UPWORK for shitty jobs on the side but pay ok!
ALI HANSON (It's Nice That)
Ali joined It's Nice That as an art director in early 2015 after stints at Wieden and Kennedy, Wonderland and Wednesday. He works across the visual sides of both the editorial platforms and commercial partnerships.
Founded in 2007, It's Nice That has grown across many platforms and reaches over a million people each month. These include the website which is updated daily, a bi-annual magazine Printed Pages, a summer symposium Here and the monthly Nicer Tuesdays talks series.
- Felt like a relatable, hard-working guy. He went through the history of It's Nice That and how it all began and he got involved.

- Works on Printed Pages which is the physical collation of the past 6 months on It's Nice That.
- Talked about how they approach their design process for the editorial - lay out all the pagination on a huge board in the studio so they can easily mess with it - how it fits together, seeing if theres enough contrast between the articles and looking at how it flows.
- Fresh approach for each issue
- They celebrate any works which they see and like within the creative industry, so its a pretty ideal job really!

- More of a abstract focused style
- Not as relevant/inspirational to my practise (more so conceptually?)
- Did this bit at the end of his talk were he asked everyone to take a piece of random collage material which he put on the stage. He just said do something with it and send it to me, I'd love to hear off you - nice interactive touch, encouraging his practise but a good ice-breaker to get in-touch
DR.ME
DR.ME are Ryan Doyle (DR) & Mark Edwards (ME). A studio based in Manchester UK & The French Riviera. Specialising in art direction, image making, graphic design, work shops, video & teaching. Their current publication Cut It Out sites the most innovative uses of collage today, from 50 leading contemporary graphic designers across 15 different countries—including Hort, Mike Perry, Stefan Sagmeister, Matthew Cooper, and many others.
- They did the 365 day collage challenge
- Stresses how personal work is just as important as that it was what boosted their social media presence and got their name out there for work! Also be super friendly and make as many friends as you can everywhere that you go - reflects on your lifestyle aswell
- Could critique their presentation styles as one of them was really enthusiastic and gave good eye contact and cues to the audience, but the other guy felt more nervous and reluctant, but got involved more towards the end.
Overall, I really enjoyed the talks and got a lot from them in terms of inspiration to start up more of my personal work, aswell as tips on my presentation skills just from obsering.
We had the chance to check out the print exhibition DR.ME were part of in Colours May Vary afterwards which was cool - I also looked at their published book responding and collating their year collage challenge and how it developed their practise! Called 'Cut It Out'
